" Overall I was mostly happy with my experience except for one issue when attempting to contact them while I had the car. When I picked up the car I was provided with a report on any damage they had noted from previous rentals. When I checked the car before leaving the airport I noted (and took pictures) of some additional damage that they did not appear to have noted. Unfortunately I did not go back in to the rental desk at the time (as the car was parked some way from the rental desk) to speak to an agent but when I arrived at my destination I sent Hertz and email with photos. I received absolutely no response from Hertz and even after sending 2 follow up emails between 7th and 14th June I still received no response. It was extremely difficult getting through to the Hertz desk at Nantes airport ( tried multiple times over the 2 weeks) and when I did I was directed to the Hertz Customer Service team. In frustration I gave up and decided to speak to an agent when I returned the car on 21st June. Thankfully the agent was very helpful but could not explain why I did not receive any response. He arranged to close the file so I was satisfied in the end but it was disappointing in the lack of a response to any of my emails to Hertz. "

" I was a Hertz Gold member some 10 years ago and stopped using Hertz. This rental confirmed my reasons for doing so. I arrived in Nantes on a cold wet afternoon having pre checked-in with Hertz. After a short wait I was gived the keys of the car and directed to parking Area B. Following a 200m walk I arrived at the car and found additional damage to that recorded. I walked back to the terminal building with the photos. When the receptions heard the car was sill in B parking they said keep the photos. They did not want to check. Externally the car was not very clean, like it had not been rinsed off properly after washing. No sooner was I driving I found it difficult to see out the windscreen thanks to a poor wiper blade and a very dirty windscreen, with a thick coating of traffic film. First service station I came to I bought windscreen cleaner. Sorry Hertz, I wont be back. That windscreen was a safety hazard. I would have walked less in the rain had I used a shuttle bus provider. "

" Our flight was delayed by an hour and a half. Hertz was supplied with our flight number and were aware of the delay. When we went to pick our car up we were told that our reservation had expired and that we could only be supplied with a larger car at €45 per day extra. The experience was like being mugged. We could see plenty of cars in our segment available, we were the last customers of the day and the office was being locked up after we left. "

" I decided to hire an electric vehicle. Bad idea. Hertz do not provide a system for accessing ev chargers. Most ev chargers in France require an RFID card and those that could be accessed via a QR code and bank card details refused my card. So I had to allow 3 hours in the vicinity of the drop off to find a charger or pay hertz a hefty charging fee. On collecting the car the Hertz desk was very busy with 4 staff serving. One staff member exclusively for Gold Card customers. After a 20 minute wait my turn came and I went to the desk for normal customers. The gentleman began to process my voucher then suddenly with out apology or excuses asked me to go back into the queue as a second person had arrived at the Gold Desk. He called that person and served them. I waited another 5/7 minutes until another desk came free. "

They gave me an old, dirty, extensively damaged car and then tried to charge me for damage caused by other clients in previous rentals. I expected better from Hertz. "

That was a substantial difference in a five day package... "

" I booked what I understood was an estate car (Ford Focus Estate or Similar) so as we could fit our buggy and luggage (2 medium suitcases). The car we were given was a Citron C4, a hatchback with a sloping roofline thus making the boot very small. We could only fit one suitcase or the buggy! We were told this was not the problem of Hertz as this was the class of car we had booked. I took out our booking information to show the gentleman and he said, "all Hertz see is a class D car and that is what we have been given, if we want a bigger car it will be a minivan and will be €180 per day extra". Prior to this the Hertz agent did attempt to up sell me with their insurance excess cover in a dishonest fashion. He kept insisting that it was included with the payment of the child car seats and I just needed to initial "here & here". When I quizzed him on the price he just said that I did not understand and that it was more beneficial to me etc. I did not understand. It was not included; it was extra. Finally, to move forward I had to tell him that I worked for the insurance company and that I understood fully. (I pay an annual premium for excess cover through another provider). I asked to speak with the manager (a lady, we were told). We were told she was too busy and could not speak to us. At the time there was only us and one other customer in the Hertz building. Despite pushing the point it was obvious they were going to do nothing for us as we did not book directly through Hertz. To add insult to injury the child car seat and booster seat they gave us were absolutely filthy! They did show us a different child car seat which was even dirtier! My wife travelled in a taxi with our second bag and buggy whilst I drove the children and one medium sized suitcase. My wife's taxi to Saint Remi cost €130 and the return trip cost €145 – Thus costing us an extra €275 not to mention the stress to get to our holiday destination. Pre pandemic I had a similar experience with GOLDCAR in Marseille and that is why this time I chose to pay more and go with Hertz, fool on me! It is these types of experiences that give the car hire industry a bad name in France. I regularly hire cars in Spain and the UK and have generally had a pleasant experience. Over the years I have only hired 4 cars in France (Hertz, Gold Car, Enterprise & Hertz) and the systematic attempts to upsell at the counter (mainly regarding insurance – i.e. on two occasions telling me that there was no insurance third party or otherwise!!) "

" Lovely car. Spotlessly clean. Expense re failing to refill your car, could be balanced with a map at the desk of the nearest petrol station, and tips perhaps on how automatic pumps work. I was ok re same, but it felt like it was all about profit and not about customer care, which didnt add in with quality and presentation of vehicle. Waiting time at the desk to collect car, seemed excessive, and I had only one customer in front of me! I can only imagine what it is like at busy periods. Staff member was trying to sell me additional excess cover, which I had purchased already on line at time of booking, but she seems unsure and disinterested around same. The only issue I had was we passed through the tunnel with cases to collect the car, we then had to go back through the tunnel with cases as the car was in the airport car park. I noticed a cigarette burn in the drivers seat that had not been marked on my documents which meant I had to return through the tunnel again. Not very efficient "

" We had super cover as part of our deal from Auto Europe but were pushed insurance cover by Hertz. If we had not been confident enough about our cover we would have felt obliged to take more insurance before receiving the keys to the car. Also fuel was pick-up full and return full which was explained that we would have to pay ?57 odd on return of the car. We asked if we do not use much fuel then should we not be allowed to refill it ourselves and only then was that option given!! "

" Not a great selection of compact cars. The opel Mervia was an appalling tank and petrol consumption was dreadful. It was seriously underpowered and dangerous to attempt overtaking even on long straight stretches of road. I resigned myself to cruising at 85/90kph even on motorways. In comparison to the other cars generally available in this group I can only say what were Hertz thinking when they acquired them. They receive a generally poor rating from car critics. My own 2.2 litre Mazda 6 sport has better economy even at motorway speeds.. "
