At this wintry time of year our first thought of Canada would be the snow-capped mountains and action-packed ski areas, which of course would be an accurate description of this wonderful country. But did you know that Canada is home to some historic and interesting castles also?
These magnificent buildings have been well preserved over the years and have been used for many purposes.
Le Chateau Frontenac, named a National Historic Site of Canada in 1980, is located in vibrant Quebec City. With stunning views of the St. Lawrence River and the city’s Old Town, this beautiful building was once the residence of British colonial governors. Now a hotel, with 18 floors, you can book into the Chateau Frontenac and live like a King and Queen for a night!
Craigdarroch Castle, also nicknamed the “bonanza castle”, was designed and built for Scottish coal barron Robert Dunsmuir. Tragically Robert died just before the castle was completed, however work continued and the building was finished in 1890. You can now visit the castle in Victoria, British Columbia, as it has been preserved as a historical museum.
Beautifully designed Casa Loma was built in the Gothic Revival architectural style. Completed in 1914, the mansion is now one of Toronto’s most famous landmarks. Tourists can explore the stunning suites found inside the building and also the five-acre beautifully kept estate gardens. It is said that there are many secret passages, but we shall leave that up to you to discover!
With so many beautiful sights to see, a car hire in Canada is the most efficient way of travelling. Book yours today and start your Canadian adventure!
