    Driving information USA

    General Information

A rental car is really a must if you want to explore this vast country. This enormous country has over 6.4 million kilometers of road and 600 000 bridges! Wherever you wish to go you can go with a car. Many states have toll roads. Speed limits and regulations differ from state to state. Driving in the United States is really easy and fun.

    Requirements
To be able to hire a vehicle in the USA, you must be at least 18 years old (age can vary by car category and State) and have held your driver's license for at least 1 year (varies from State to State). For drivers under the age of 25 an additional young driver surcharge may apply locally. If your license is in English you do not need an International Driver's license. Seatbelts are mandatory and children up to age 5 must be seated in a child seat.

    Speed Limits
Speed limits in the USA are set by each State but are generally:

    • Town and city: approx. 40 km/h/25mph
    • Open Roads: approx. 90-100 km/h/55-65mph
    • Motorways: approx. 112 km/h/70mph

    Traffic restrictions
In the USA you drive on the right side of the road. Always give right of way to pedestrians, bikers, school buses, police cars, fire trucks and ambulances.

    Petrol
Petrol stations are very easy to find and fuel cost less here than in Ireland.

    Tolls
Several American states have toll motorways. You collect a ticket when entering the road and pay in the toll booth while exiting.

    Parking
On street parking is often not allowed. Remember to only park in designated areas. Avoid parking where there is a yellow or white line painted on the curb. Finding a parking lot is very easy in the United States.
