    General Information

South Africa is an interesting country that offers many attractions and beautiful nature scenery. Drive from Cape Town in the southwest, make a stop in Port Elizabeth along the coast and finish in Durban on the East coast. If you wish to travel north you can visit Johannesburg and Pretoria. Please remember to bring extra fuel since there are great distances between petrol stations.

    Requirements
To rent a car, you must be at least 18 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 1 year. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional  young driver surcharge may apply locally. Seatbelts are mandatory.

    Speed Limits
Speed limits in South Africa are:

    • Town and city: 60 km/h
    • Motorways: 120 km/h

    Traffic restrictions
In South Africa you drive on the left side of the road, just like in Ireland. In South Africa you will pay high fees for speeding and the police collects the fines on the spot. Usage of hand held mobile phones while driving is banned.

    Petrol
Many petrol stations open 7 days a week from 07:00 to 19:00. Some stations are open 24h, especially in cities such as Durban

    Tolls
Many of the national roads are toll roads. You pay either by cash or credit card. The cost is between 0.20 - 5.50 EUR.
