    Driving information New Zealand

    General Information

When travelling by car in New Zealand you might want to visit both the North and South island. Since no rental cars are allowed on ferries please be advised that there are special rules applying. You must take the ferry without the car and pick up a new one on the other side. This can easily be arranged when you book your car in New Zealand with us at Auto Europe. Just let us know.

    Requirements
To rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 1 year. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional young driver surcharge may apply locally.

    Speed Limits
Speed limits in New Zealand are:

    • Town and city: 50 km/h
    • Motorways 100 km/h

    Traffic restrictions
In New Zealand you drive on the left side of the road, just like in Ireland. Both the driver and the passenger must wear safety belts. Children under the age of 3 must sit in an age appropriate car safety seat.

    Petrol
There are many petrol stations available and fuel can be bought 24 h a day in the bigger cities.

    Tolls
Apart from the road between Orewa and Puhoi, north of Auckland, there are no toll motorways in New Zealand.

    Parking
Parking meters are common in bigger cities. Be aware that finding a parking spot in for instants Auckland can be very hard. One tip is to park the car in the outskirts and take a commuter train into the centre. It is cheaper.
