    Driving information Greece

    General Information

The motorways in Greece connect the country in a good way. The oldest and most known motorway is the A1 PAThE (Piraeus-Athens-Thessaloniki-Evzoni). Bay driving this road you will pass through many important regions of this diverse country.

When you drive a rental car in Greece be aware. Take it slow and prepare for the unforeseen. The Greek way of driving differs quite much from what you might be used to.

To rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 1 year. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional young driver surcharge may apply locally, same for drivers over 70. Seatbelts are mandatory and children up to age 4 must be seated in a child seat.

    Speed Limits
    Speed limits in Greece are:

    • Town and city: 50 km/h
    • Open Roads: 80 km/h
    • Motorways: 100 km/h

    Traffic restrictions
In Greece you drive on the right and if driving in a three lane road the middle lane is for overtaking.

Petrol stations are normally open from 07:00 to 19:00.

If you wish to drive on one of the two National roads, called Ethniki Odos, you must pay a toll. The fee is around 1-2 EUR and has to be paid in cash.

In the bigger Greek cities such as Athens, on-street parking is almost non-existent. We recommend that you find a tourist parking lot or hotel parking since illegal parking can cost you your license plate.
