    Driving information Germany

    General Information

In Germany you can drive your rental car on almost 9660 km of Autobahn. The roads are very well kept and for a long time the German road system was a role model for other countries. On the Autobahn there is free speed. But remember that during the night and in bad weather conditions there are speed limits. The German road system is well connected with neighboring country roads, which makes it easy to visit a nearby country.

    Requirements
To rent a car in Germany, you must be at least 18 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 1-3 years. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional young driver surcharge may apply locally. Seatbelts are mandatory and children up to age 12 must be seated in a child safety seat.

    Speed Limits
    Speed limits in Germany are:

    • Town and city: 50 km/h
    • Open Roads: 100 km/h
    • Motorways: 130 km/h

    Traffic restrictions
In Germany you drive on the right side. The far left lane on the Autobahn is for cars travelling the fastest. Avoid this lane if you are not willing to drive more than 160kpm. If a car approaches you from behind and indicates with the headlamp flasher, change the lane and give the car free way. This is a very common way of showing that they want to overtake.

    Petrol
Petrol stations are normally open from 08:00 to 20:00. In bigger cities such as Berlin and on the Autobahn you can find some stations open 24 h.

    Tolls
In Germany there are no toll motorways.

    Parking
Parking is allowed only on the right side of the road except on one-way streets where you can park on both sides. Parking spaces with meters are usually free of charge during the night.
