    Driving information in Canada

    General Information

Canada is a vast country with nearly 550,000 km of roads. The major motorways for the most part do not require a toll and are generally well maintained. Provincial roads vary in quality, but all major motorways are of high quality. Please note that using a mobile phone while driving is banned in Canada. If you must use your phone make sure you have a hands-free device.

    Requirements
To rent a car in Canada, you must be at least 18 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 1 year. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional young driver surcharge may apply locally. Seatbelts are mandatory and children up to age 3 must be seated in a child seat.

    Speed Limits
    Speed limits in Canada are:

    • Town and city: 50 - 80 km/h
    • Open roads: 70 - 90 km/h
    • Motorways: 80 - 110 km/h

    Traffic restrictions
In Canada you drive on the right and if a car approaches you and signals an intention to pass, you must turn on your right directional to signal that the road ahead is clear.

    Petrol
Petrol stations in major cities and on the motorways are open 24 hours.

    Tolls
Generally you'll only encounter tolled roads on highways leading into the U.S.

    Parking
Canada being the vast and sparsely populated country that it is will not pose any major parking difficulties except, as in most countries, when you decide to venture into major cities. When in cities, always read the text on the green parking kiosk carefully as you will not see any parking meters. Purchase a ticket at the kiosk and place behind windshield on your dash making it visible from the outside.
