    Driving information Brazil

    General Information

Brazil is a vast country with nearly 2 million kilometers of  roads, 200,000 km of which are paved. Driving anywhere in Brazil requires a maximum amount of attention. If you're bold enough to drive at all in Brazil, try and avoid driving at night. Brazil roads have many potholes (mainly because of lack of investment by the government) and animals (which are left near roads by locals). When driving you should be careful of this, as it is the primary source of road accidents in Brazil.

    Requirements
To rent a car in Brazil, you must be at least 18 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 1 year. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional young driver surcharge may apply locally. Seatbelts are mandatory.

    Speed Limits
    Speed limits in Brazil are:

    • Town and city: 60 km/h
    • Motorways and open roads: 120 km/h

    Traffic restrictions
In Brazil you drive on the right and if a car approaches you and signals an intention to pass, you must turn on your right directional to signal that the road ahead is clear.

    Petrol
Petrol stations in major cities and on the motorways are open 24 hours.

    Tolls
Because many roads in Brazil are under funded by the government they have decided to allow private companies operate many roads. These roads are usually tolled roads.

    Parking
Brazil being the vast country that it is will not pose any major parking difficulties except, as in most countries, when you decide to venture into major cities. When in cities such as Rio de Janeiro, please avoid parking on public streets. Try finding parking in apartment parking lots or parking facilities.

    Rental Restrictions

    General Information
Most car categories can be driven throughout Brazil. If you wish to drive abroad (outside Brazil) you need to purchase additional coverage. Please note that you may not take your rental car on a ferry. Due to insurance regulations, there are restrictions on luxury car categories and on travel in certain countries. Please take a moment to ensure that your intended itinerary will be possible with the car you plan to book.

    Restricted countries
There are various rules which apply if you plan on taking your car outside of Brazil so please inform us ahead of time if you intend on travelling abroad. There are additional insurance fees that apply for these rentals. If you want to cross any national border(s) with your rental car it is important that you please contact us on +49 89 412 09 786.

Domestic one-way rentals are available between certain locations, additional fees may apply. Fees also apply for international one-way rentals. Some vehicles are prohibited on international one way rentals.
