    Driving information Austria

    General Information

In this hilly country you are certain to get a splendid view while driving along the motorway. You will get the most scenic view while driving the E45 through the Brenner Pass. It is a mountain pass that divides Austria and Italy. The Europe Bridge is 180 meters tall and carries the six lane motorway over the mountain pass. In Austria there are just a few hours travel between the major cities. With car hire all is easily reachable.

To be able to rent a car, you must be at least 18 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 1 year. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional young driver surcharge may apply locally. Seatbelts are mandatory and children up to age 12 must be seated in a child safety seat.

    Speed Limits
    Speed limits in Austria are:

    • Town and city: 50 km/h
    • Open Roads: 100 km/h
    • Motorways: 130 km/h

    Traffic restrictions
In Austria you drive on the right side of the road. Please note that dipped headlights are recommended also during day time. If you must use a mobile phone while driving use a hands free, otherwise you might face fines.

Petrol stations are normally open from 08:00 to 20:00. In bigger cities and on the motorway you can find some stations open 24 h.

While travelling on any motorway in Austria you are compelled to display a motorway toll sticker (Vignette). When you rent a car with Auto Europe in Vienna or any other city, a free toll sticker is normally included in the rate. On your voucher you can read all the details.

In Austria you can park in "Blue zones". Make sure you place your imprinted parking disc well visible on your dashboard. This disc allows you to park for 3 hours. In Salzburg it can be hard to find a parking lot in the city centre. Here you can park your car on one of the Park & Drive lots outside of the centre and take the bus into the city.
