Switzerland is usually associated with winter and snow, but it is a wonderful country to visit any time of year. Geneva is probably the most famous city in Switzerland but is only the 2nd largest, Zurich having a larger population. Many people think it is the capital of Switzerland , but that honour belongs to Bern, the 4th largest city.

Situated on the banks of Lake Geneva, the city has been voted one of the best places in the world to live, and also one of the most expensive! We have put together the 5 things we think you shouldn’t miss on your visit to Geneva.

The Red Cross Museum – Geneva is the birth place of the Red Cross and this museum is the only one dedicated to the work of Henry Dunant. There are 11 areas that cover the principles, history and work of this wonderful organisation.

The Patek Philippe Museum – One of the things Switzerland is famous for is its watches and clocks. This museum has many fine examples of time pieces dating back to the 16th century. You can also discover the history of watch making. And, if you have a spare £20,000, you could treat yourself to a nice new Patek Philippe watch!

Place du Bourg-de-Four – In the heart of the old town of Geneva is the Place du Bourg-de-Four which as been a hub of commerce since the 16th century. There are many architectural delights here and some lovely bistros where you can relax and enjoy a coffee.

Cathedral St Pierre – With its Neoclassical façade and Romanesque and Gothic nave, this is a building of many styles. You can climb to the top of the north tower of the cathedral where there are wonderful views of Geneva. There are also Roman mosaic floors and other interesting archaeological finds under the cathedral which were discovered in 1976 when the foundations needed reinforcing.

The Lake – If you are in Geneva you have to take a trip on the lake. A full lake tour will take about about 2 hours. You will get to see some amazing scenery and also a commentary about the lakes history. There are other types of cruises available, enjoy ice cream sundaes as you tour the lake or take an evening tour and enjoy a glass of champagne with that special person as the sun sets.
