The St Patrick’s Day celebrations are enjoyed in many countries; making it nearly as popular as New Year’s Eve! Ok, so maybe we aren’t quite on the same level but if you think about it, which other saint’s day is celebrated worldwide?
If you are lucky enough to be globe trekking and looking for that perfect city to celebrate with your fellow countrymen, here are our best away from home St. Patrick’s Day celebrations cities:
New York City, USA
The Big Apple does not disappoint when it comes to the 17Th March party. The city turns a sparkly shade of green and the streets are filled with marching bands and exciting floats. The Police Service of Northern Ireland are even joining in with the parade, which is New York’s oldest celebration!
Sydney, Australia
You may be forgiven for thinking that there are more Irish than Australians that live in Sydney, if you are lucky enough to be around on the 17th March. All of the pubs and bars are decorated in the traditional green flags and the amount of Guinness that is sold on the day could well match that of Ireland. The city hosts a large parade that ends with the singing of the Irish national anthem in the city’s central Hyde Park.
London, UK
For those a little closer to home, London has its St Patrick’s Day festival on the closest Sunday to the 17th March. The festival is now in its 13th year and has had many themes showcased in the past; this year’s, it’s the World of Dance! You can expect live music, street dancers and entertainers plus the traditional festival floats.
Cabo Roig, Costa Blanca, Spain
If the Spanish could turn the waters of the sea green, then I’m sure this lovely coastal town would for one day! There is a magical parade perfect for all of the family and town’s restaurants all join in with the fun, offering traditional Irish food and drink. To top off the day, there is a fantastic firework display at the Town Hall in the evening!
So if you are feeling a little homesick then do not fear; just head for your nearest city and join in with the fun!
