    The Origins of Oktoberfest

The lively annual Oktoberfest event, held annually is a celebration enjoyed around the globe, made famous by the size of the beer jugs and the serving of German sausage. But what is the origin of this joyful festival and when did it all begin?

Let’s jump in our DeLorean and head back to 1810, October 12th, to be precise. On this day in the fields of Munich the Crown Prince Ludwig married his is Princess; Therese of Saxony-Hidburghausen. The Crown Prince wanted to share his happiness with the citizens of Munich and invited them all to attend the festivities that were held on the 17th October, in the celebration of his marriage. Back then, the main attraction for the visitor’s was the horse racing.

Over the years, traditions have changed; there are no more horse races and the celebrations now start in September, so that the milder weather can be enjoyed. Although traditionally an event held in Bavaria, Germany, the Oktoberfest parties now appear in countries all over the world.

Never ones to miss out on a good party; here in Ireland we too like to throw our own version of the festival as well. The streets of Dublin will be lined with German Markets and servers will be dressed in the traditional lederhosen attire from the 18th of September through to the 5th October.

Did you know that even Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, and Namibia all take part in the celebration? No matter where in the world you find yourself late September, you will never be too far away from German made beer and salty pretzels.
