Skiing in Greece? Yes! Although Greece is mainly associated with summer holidays, it has seen a rapid development of ski resorts in the recent years. You may now go skiing in the morning and take rest on the beach in the afternoon!

Greece has been investing in snow sport infrastructure with an attempt to attract both Greeks and foreign tourists. Currently, there are 21 ski and snowboard resorts open, located between the northern Peloponnese and Macedonian border. Ski routes differ in difficulty and vary in altitude, ranging from 5000 to 8200 feet. Winter is probably the best time to visit Greek mythological cities, antique temples or museums, as all the tourist crowds are already gone.

Most popular ski resorts are located near Thessaloniki, north of Greece. Vermio’s Mountain is home to Tria Pente Pigadia Ski Center with routes both for cross country and downhill skiing on various sites of the peak. One of the ski slopes is over 6 miles long.

The most important ski resort in Peloponnese, and the second largest in Greece, is Kalavrita with 12 ski routes. Snow sport fans can well combine their outdoor activities with sightseeing, as Kalavrita is located close to a port city Patras. The region of Achaia is reach in vineyards and home to the mythological Styx river.

Pilion ski resort, close to Volos, offers FIS downhill trials and over 3 miles of cross country routes. It is located within half an hour drive from a picturesque Mylopotamos beach. Snow sport fans can enjoy the the view over the sea from the ski slopes. Journeys between Athens airport to the Pilion ski resort take about two hours by car.
