There are over 100 pyramids in Egypt, with most close to the capital city of Cairo and along the western banks of the River Nile. These magnificent monuments were built to keep safe the Pharaoh King’s bodies after they had died. The Egyptians believed that if the Pharaoh’s body was mummified, then he would live on forever. The kings were buried in their tombs along with all of their gold and other wealthy items.
The most famous pyramid is The Great Pyramid, built for King Khufu. It took 20 years to finish, and stands at over 140 meters high. Like most of the pyramids, inside on the walls are paintings. Left there by the Egyptians, they tell a story of how they lived and how the pyramids were built.
You can take a guided tour inside most of the Pyramids; however the number of tourists per day is limited as a way to best preserve these ancient wonders.
Why not take a trip to other exciting sites and visit the Great Step Pyramid Complex at Saggera, or have your photo taken besides the Sphinx? This Mammoth-sized statue has the body of a lion and a head of a human. We do not know for certain why and by whom the Sphinx was built, but it is believed that it was to guard over the Pharaohs’ tombs.
The best time to visit with a car hire in Egypt would be in the spring; February to April, and Autumn: September to November months. The temperature and these times of years are perfect for days filled with adventure.
