Catalonia - Sun, Sea and Culture!

Barcelona is the capital of the Catalonia region of Spain and the largest city on the Mediterranean coast. A vibrant but cultural city Barcelona has some magnificent architecture. The Sagrada Familia church by Gaudi is stunning. Started in 1882 it is still being constructed but has been a tourist attaction for many years. There are also several beaches in Barcelona, a lively night life and it is home to the Nou Camp stadium which is a must see even if you don’t like football!

The Catalonia region also incoporates the Costa Brava. Lloret de Mar is the largest resort along this stretch of the coast and is popular with the younger holiday makers. Girona is an ancient town with a lovely Baroque cathedral and a wonderful Romanesque building that houses the Arab Baths.

Another interesting town in the Catalonia region is Reus. A picturesque town with a wonderful 16th century Gothic bell tower from the top of which there are spectacular views of the town. Just outside of Reus is Port Adventura, one of the largest theme parks in Europe which includes Mexican, Wild West and Polynesian areas with rides and shows for all the family.

Tarragona also has many historic sights such as the Roman ruins which are now a World Heritage Site and the Gothic cathedral dating back to the 12th century. It also hosts several events throughout the year including the International Fireworks display competition and the Santa Tecla Festival.

Catalonia is also the first region in Spain to ban bullfighting which will come into effect in January 2012.
