Best ways to protect your skin on summer holidays

Enjoying a relaxing time under the sun, swimming outdoors, jogging, or even just lying on the beach are just a few examples of what everyone looks forward to do while on holidays. However, getting a terrible sunburn can ruin these magical moments almost instantly. The latest research commissioned by Auto Europe shows that 30% of Europeans sunbathe for at least three hours a day on holidays, therefore increasing the risk of sunburn. Here’s a list of preventive actions to keep you safe and cool for the summer holidays.

    Location, location, location!

SunbathingHats, umbrellas, a good pair of sunglasses and a high quality sunscreen are no-brainer products to cover up your skin. We are constantly being exposed to the sun during our daily activities, so it’s important to pay attention to the smallest details, such as driving with your arm exposed to the sun, or neglecting to protect areas such as the neck, ears and face.

    The right one

Choosing the right sunblock cream is fundamental to keep you protected. A sunscreen with broad-spectrum or protection for both UVB and UVA will help shield your skin not only from sunburns, but also from cancer-causing UV rays. Some work by reflecting the light away from your body, while others absorb the UV rays before they reach the skin. Either way, the right product should have SPF 15 or higher and be water resistant, in case you are exercising.

    Timing is everything

According to the same study, Europeans on summer holidays generally arrive at their sunbeds at around noon. Considering that the sun is at its strongest between 11.00 am and 3.00 pm, it’s important to schedule the sun exposure time accordingly. Additionally, remember to reapply sunscreen regularly (every two hours is the recommended parameter).

Staying hydrated and consuming liquids throughout the day is also crucial. Always make sure to have in hands a bottle of filtered water, fruit juice, iced tea, or even flavoured sparkling water. Be prepared, especially if you plan to sunbathe for long hours. Just like 14% of Swedes, for instance, who like spend around 4
hours under the sun. Or like 5% of the German participants, who revealed spending over 10 hours sunbathing.

    The aftermath of summer holidays

After enjoying a delightful day under the sun, it´s time to cool down and nourish the skin. Specialized lotions and natural body sprays are just a few ideas to keep your skin fresh, cool and hydrated.

With so many great products and scientific knowledge, there is no excuse not to protect the skin from sun exposure. We hope these suggestions provided you with a few ideas to enjoy your summer without worries! Don’t forget to let us know any other tips we might have missed.
