A weekend in Copenhagen

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and has become a very popular holiday destination in Northern Europe. The city is perfect for a long weekend trip, where you can stroll along the old streets and charming channels, most of which were built in the 17th century. Copenhagen offers great shopping opportunities from both international and local designers. In fact the local Nordic designers have become so popular worldwide, that Copenhagen has become a must for all fashion interested. The city also has great hotels, world-class restaurants, including the world’s best restaurant, Noma.

Visit one of the many museums, such as Louisiana that shows both international and local exhibitions, see the Queen’s castle and take a trip past the famous Little Mermaid. This famous little statue is based on the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen and created by the Edvard Erisken, who used his wife as a model to sculpture the mermaid. The statue was revealed the 23rd of August 1913 and has been a symbol of Copenhagen and Denmark ever since.
It is also a statue that has a strange history, as her head has been chopped off twice and stolen. However, today she sits on a stone in the water and lets tourists flock around her to take pictures.

Tivoli opened in 1843 and is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world. The traditional fairytale garden is impressive and beautiful to walk through. Each small spot in the garden is lit up by fairy lights and decorated with beautiful flower. Here you will find something for everyone. Let the daredevils try the fast and high amusements, while other can enjoy theatre, concerts and great restaurants.

Christiania is a free town close to the centre of Copenhagen and without a doubt one of Denmark’s biggest tourist attractions. The history of Christiania stretches back to 1971, when a group of squatters cut a hole in the fence to the barracks. Come here to experience the unmistakable ‘70s vibe, eat from the great street kitchens and listen to both small and large concerts.

Nyhavn (translated to New Habour) started as a busy commercial port in 1673, where ships from all over the world docked and thus the life in the harbour was marked by sailors, pubs, girls and parties. This famous area of Copenhagen is know for its charming, old and colourful houses, which today have been renovated and turned into traditional Danish restaurants. Nyhavn is especially popular in summer, where people (international as well as local) meet in the sun.
