" Main issues are: The depot is about 2km from the airport, necessitating collection by van. The collection point is not clear. It is not in the Car Rental village but is located at P4 in the area for buses. The collection took some time, about 30 minutes and this is not ideal in very hot weather. Conversely, the trip back was clockwork and quick, partly because we knew what we were doing. Car Hire was cheap, so you have to allow for that. "

When I have used this site before I have stuck to renting cars from Sixt and Europcar with great success and satisfaction. " Pick up was smooth and efficient and I was dropping back the car at 4am and that was facilitated and i was shown where to drop the key. However I was not emailed a copy of the contract as I was told I would be by staff when leaving the counter. There was considerable damages scratches to the car and I could not check these against the contract. I took a video before taking the car from the carpark. Since I came home I have been charged €59.08 for Additional Services. At countwer I was told that I was paying €259 euro fuel deposit which would be refunded if i returned the car full. I have contacted Budget since and have been informed that part of that €259 was for 24 hour roadside assistance. I absoultely under no circumstances verbally accepted this at the counter. I declined addtional insurances as I have my own carhire excess insurance policy. As you can see from my account I do a number of carhires through Autoeurope and Ive never had such issues in past. "

" Auto europe has always been a great service for getting good value car rental - however in the last few occasions I have noticed that when comparing prices the way the prices are presented is not as transparent as it used to be... The table with the cheapest prices ... when you go to book the extras bring up the price very substantially which used not be the case. Also no included in the highest level of extra insurance is ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE - That should be a basic - the car is afterall a rental - it is the company's car and if it breaksdown it really is down to them to get their car back and provide an alternative to the customer. Having to pay €7+ per day to cover such a basic requirement for a rental car is a BIG NEGATIVE "
" we arrived at the Sixt drop off location where we were supposed to return the car to be told by two sixt workers that the people who checked back in the car were not there and we could just leave the keys without getting the car checked and signed off. When we said this was not acceptable they suggested that we drive to the Sixt office in Faro Airport which we did in the lashing rain - to find the same attitude - just leave the keys when I asked for the car to be checked and signed back - it was done reluctantly and we had to wait for another customer who arrived after us to be dealt with. The car was checked and damage on a wheel was identified - we showed fotos of the damage ( taken at SIXT Pick Up ) - which proved that this predated our rental of the vehicle - we were told that the supervisor was not present and the worker did not have the authority to sign back the vehicle as "undamaged" and he said the only way was to check it back and take up the query about the damage with Sixt Online afterwards. When we insisted that this was not acceptable - he eventually phoned the supervisor and after some toing and froing ( all in portuguese - the worker's english like his authority to check back the vehicle was not operable ) The vehicle was checked back with "undamaged" certified. The ease at which both offices of Sixt wanted the vehicle handed back with no sign off from them on the spot made me feel that this was a systematic scheme to push customers towards a protracted online dispute resolution system. From experience this is a nightmare and luckily we had fotos of the car at pick up ( which was communicated by the worker to his supervisor on the phone with a degree of regret !! ) It all left a very bad taste and if a customer was under time pressure to catch a flight - you would give in and face inevitable loss of excess fees etc. I "

Car hire itself is competitive, but it is the added insurance that has wide cost discrepancies, i.e. much higher when booking directly with car rental companies. However, if through a third party like yourself, the service becomes 'frosted', a subtle threat of possible damage, freezing a certain amount on credit cards, cars not properly cleaned on the outside, combined with bad lighting makes pre-hire inspection difficult, etc, etc "

" I have rented a car from Centauro in Lisbon on my week long visit. It was a horrible experience form the very beginning. First of all, the airport shuttle bus pick-up is very difficult to find as it's not signposted anywhere. I found it eventually and got dropped to their rental office along with 6 other people. The were 3 employees doing the contracts and with 6 people in the queue you'd think this wouldn't take long. Think again.. I't took almost an hour. The person who did my contract had a passive aggressive attitude. He was forcing the extra insurance on me at a premium price even though i had a full cover from a third party insurance provider - that's what I do all the time and never had an issue with other rental companies. After I refused it on the grounds that I had a full cover already, he bluntly told me that wasn't going to help me in any way. He said it hasn't happened yet that they wouldn't find damage on the car to charge for and started listing the cost - €500 if they find a mark on alloy wheel, €250 for a small paint scratch and the list went on. He also said they did not have a mechanism to handle damage claims through third party insurance. Bottom line was that I either had to pay their full cover premium insurance now or pay much higher charge for 'damages' later. It was not worth ruining a holiday over this so I paid, made a note to myself never rent from Centauro again and moved on. I had a great holiday in Algarve and forgot about all this until it was time to return the car. The lady who did the return inspection was beyond rude. She pointed her finger to a small bit of sand on the driver's side door mat and said she'll charge me the cleaning fee. I disagreed and refused to pay. She was totally dismissive, went off and charged the cleaning fee from the deposit they held on my credit card. The dispute escalated to the point that the police was involved. So I was driving past the Europcar pick up point the next day and pulled in to warn them that the car needed a service and that if they don't change the car I will be bringing it back 500km past its service interval. they told me it was OK, I thanked them and took the name of the manager that OK'd me driving away. I would still go back and use them again because they are almost as cheap as Goldcar, without the awful reputation. "

It caused unnecessary delays and inconvenience at both the point of collecting the car and returning the car with the added aggravation of arguing with the Europcar supervisor as to whether the so called damages was pre-existing or not. I have no doubt that the wheel trim damage in this case was there before I collected the car but there is no way for me to prove this. I don't believe that I could have taken enough photos in advance of taking delivery of the car as there were so many small scuffs and scratches, some too difficult to see, especially in the poor lighting conditions. So to conclude, I am very dissatisfied with the Car Rental Industry but not surprised! James Cotter. "
" Firefly did not have a desk at the Airport but was represented by Hertz which in itself was very difficult to discover - An A4 sheet on a small stand almost behind a ticketing machine was the only sign. There was a queue ticketing system in place which gave priority to Hertz Customers even if they joined the queue later than a Firefly customer. When I spoke about this to the Hertz representative the answer was "Well what do you expect for booking the cheapest company" - Not very customer friendly! And, keeping the best (or worst) for last, Hertz only had Electric Cars available when I eventually got to the desk (even though I had specifically not included same in the booking) and the attitude from the Hertz rep was a "Shrug of the shoulders" and "Tough luck, there's nothing I can do" Barbara I believe was the ladies name. I had to call Autoeurope Portugal and ask for assistance, the Autoeurope rep that I spoke to (unfortunately I cannot remember his name) was extremely helpful and did arrange an alternative booking with Europcar in a very short time. Unfortunately, the Europecar experience turned out to be not that good either - The car already had a lot of scuffs and scratches on it when collected (which were not recorded on the paperwork) - I had to ask the Europcar rep to record some of these on the paperwork before I took the car but she seemed not to be interested in doing so saying that it was "OK / OK" but I insisted - I took some photos of the unrecorded scuffs but I expect that I didn't see them all and the lighting was poor in the parking area where I collected the car. On returning the car I was asked to "Just leave the paperwork in the car" but I said that I preferred to stay with it until the inspection was completed - The rep "Found" additional scuff marks, one on the drivers door mirror and another on the front left wheel trim, both of which I refused to accept responsibility for as I definitely had not caused the so called damage. I spoke to the rep who had rented the car to me and asked to see the report of the previous hire and return but was told that "They were filed away" and could not be accessed - I then asked to speak with a supervisor, who when I went into the office, started to tell me that I was responsible for these "New" scuffs and would have to pay for the damages but I maintained that I had not caused them and insisted that he review any records that he had and would you believe it, he found that the scuff on the drivers door mirror was actually "An old damage" recorded on a previous hire. The scuff mark on the wheel trim remained in contention, but as I was returning the car earlier than expected and so effectively had a shorter hire, he offered this saving as a portion of the damage to the wheel trim so in order to bring the matter to a conclusion I agreed to pay the balance and continue to check in for my flight. During this conversation, with both the supervisor and the rep who had hired the car to me, I asked on several occasion why it was that the damages / scuff marks had not been recorded correctly on the paperwork before the car was released on hire but I failed to receive an answer, and when I asked the rep why she, at the point of releasing the car to me, had not seen the damage to the drivers door mirror the answer was that "It is very dark in the car park upstairs" and my response was that "It is nice and bright here in the rental returns car park so that all these "New" damages can be seen". I am aware that the Car Hire industry is notorious for this kind of behavior but this was my first time encountering it to this extent. I am very dissatisfied with the inaccurate recording of previous damage / scuff marks on the paperwork before offering the car for rental and for the "couldn't be bothered" attitude of the rep when I pointed out the unrecorded damage / scuff marks in this case before I took the car. As an aside, but worth noting, as I was leaving the supervisors office an American gentleman was approaching the desk saying that "I am being told that I damaged the car but the car was so dirty when I collected it I could not see if it was damaged at the time" I wonder how much he paid? One comment regarding Autoeurope customer support, very difficult to get to speak with somebody in English. "

" I would like to make a formal complaint against Drive-on and apply for a refund. The car tyres were in bad condition (we have photos to prove this). The car punctured resulting in our having to make an emergency call out to get the wheel changed. Drive-on then charged us €250 on return of the car which they deducted from our deposit. We were driving on regular roads around Quinta do Lago and the car would not have punctured if the tyres hadn't been in such bad condition. I would like a refund of the €250 please through AutoEurope. We will never use Drive-On again and based on the other very poor reviews online, I would strongly suggest that AutoEurope should not list them. " I use Auto Europe almost every week with work and find the service very good. For this trip I was travelling with family, and required the use of a booster seat for my 4 year old son. I know that these extras can add substantially, and I would change a booking based on this, so I was pleasantly surprised, when the booster seat was included at no extra charge, and it also said in my voucher "1x booster seat" in the comments so I took this that this booster was included in my rental fee. It was not made clear anywhere on the website that this fee needs to be paid locally, and what this would be. It is hidden in the small print of the contract, which I was shown when I got into a heated argument at the budget desk to say that I had only reserved a booster seat, but the privelage of using it was going to set me back an additional €11 or so per day. If I was aware of this at time of booking I would have changed the booking or brought my own. Indeed I saw booster seats in Aldi in Portugal for €15 so me paying €11.56 per day makes for healthy profit margins. At the airport we were then provided with a full car seat, when we only needed a booster seat. When we queried this with the provider, they stated that the booster seat is cheaper than a full seat, but when I referred this to budget, they denied this, and again told me to read my contract. All of this leaves a very sour taste, and caused undue stress at the beginning of our holiday. If I never have to deal with budget again it will be too soon, and I am very disappointed with the way Autoeurope present these extras on the website. Normally they come up as an extra charge so you can see what they are. When you are used to this system, and then you book and it comes up as €0, it is not a jump in conclusions to imagine that this is covered. To add to the frustration the costs outlined in the contract, the costs in the rental agreement, and the final costs charged appear to have nothing in common. I can't link any of them, apart from the fact that I prepaid €211.53 to budget, and they then charged me a further €104.40 in extras for the weeks rental I expected better from 2 reputable companies in budget and autoeurope. "

" I had a very unsatisfactory experience with guerin. The queue to sign in was terribly long and we were waiting over an hour to check in. It may have been a busy time so I could over look this if it was the end of my concerns. When wr got to the parking lot we were led to a car which was in tatty condition. Every panel on the car was damaged or scratched. When I got into the the car to drive it a message came on the screen to say a brake light wasn't working. I got out of the car and checked the brake lights for correct operation and saw that the driver's side light wasn't working. I told the guerin representative who replied its only supposed to have two lights. I told him that was nonsense. He got a supervisor and she proceeded to tell me the same thing. I was amazed to be told the same ridiculous lie twice. I then asked them what would happen if I was stopped by the police or was involved in a vehicle accident because of a broken brake light. She then reluctantly offered to get another car which she said might be smaller than the car I had already loaded with the luggage of my four family members. At this point I chose to drive away with the broken light and rub the risk of being stopped by the police. Having said all that, mechanically the car never gave any trouble, it just looked bad parked beside my brother's immaculate car that he rented from sixt. The drop off went well no problem "

" Despite requesting two booster seats at the time of booking, there was only one available at the office at the time of collection. The Avis rep suggested he could get it dropped to my hotel (about 3km away), but I had got a taxi in to the office with the whole family so we could collect the car and go from there. In the end, a pretty unapologetic response to "go grab a coffee and come back in an hour" was the best I got. My reservation was for 11am and in the end I only got going at 12:30pm. When I asked if I could delay the drop off to 12:30 in order to get the 48 hours I had booked, one of the nicer Avis reps suggested that they would collect the car from the hotel to save me driving back, which was acceptable. On inspection the car was quite dusty but new and very clean inside, no complaints on the car itself. However, I only noticed about 5km down the road that the tank was only three quarters full, instead of full to full. Fair enough, I'm supposed to check these things before leaving, but it's still very annoying when the policy suggested the car would be full at pick up. I have photographs to prove it. I thought about returning the car with 3/4 of a tank, but because I wasn't returning the car to the Avis office, I didn't want to risk getting charged the fuel surcharge. "

" When we arrived at the Thrify car hire desk , there was chaos. Lots of families with young children waiting to pick up a car. Waiting times were 1 to 2 hours. They did not have enough staff and maybe this was due to the fact that Portugal were playing in the World Cup football that day. It was disappointing waiting for 1.5 hours with a 4 year old and an 8 year old after mid night. At the desk, the Thrifty rep was trying to offer me all sorts of deals - she was like a robot and I had no interest in a Mercedes upgrade with two young kids and a three hour drive to our house in Obidos. " We always use Autorent and have had largely good experiences - particularly as we can see all the options clearly and choose the insurance option that is right for us. However, there is one big issue that we have that I'd love to see Autoeurope take control of to improve the overall transparency of the entire process. It would just be great to be able to see very clearly the deposit amount that will be taken from the credit card. At the moment you need to do quite a bit of digging in the fine print - even with zero excess insurance we had to pay over 300 on our card, something that was buried in the fine print and really not very clear unless you searched for the information. If Autoeurope could have this information front and centre it would remove a lot of frustration - sentiments echoed by friends who also rent cars. "
" Booked a Fiat 500 'or similar' but got an Opel Corsa - a bigger car. Frustrating that this always seems to happen when we rent a car - we never get the car we booked despite the fact that we pay that bit extra in an attempt to get the one we wanted. In this case we really wanted a smaller car. The Car was in pretty poor shape with quite a few dents and scratches and a damaged windscreen. Overall though the experience wasn't terrible - had to wait for about 30 mins for our shuttle and while the staff tried to upsell insurance (despite the fact that we had highest cover and zero excess), it wasn't all that unpleasant. Just unfortunate that you have to be so vigilant, as with most car hire companies, with regards to the fine print, excess, deposits held on credit cards etc. Even with the zero excess cover we had a hold of 300 euro put on our credit card. " The return of a vehicle was problematic. Only two clerks worked in the office. There was a crazy load. We arrived half an hour before the scheduled time for the return of the vehicle and three hours before the flight. In the end because of the delays we missed our flight which cost us 430 euros. Note that they also found two scratches on a wheel cover. They charged us another 196 euros. To the best of my knowledge, we had insurance and I intend to examine why this damage can not be covered. " I have booked with Europcar before. this time I booked a Renault megane estate. when I got to the counter the staff said they had a Kia sportage but did not think it would be big enough for our luggage and recommended a Renault Kadjar instead ( 140euro more) they also said it was automatic. I did not know then but the Kia sportage has the same size boot and would have worked for us at no extra charge. Also when we picked up the car it was not automatic but at that stage it had taken so long I did not feel able to go back to the desk. I was disappointed with this. Also there were a lot of extra scratches on the car that I had to point out to the attendant that were not listed on the paperwork. The Kia would have been fine. I have Used Europcar before and been happy with the service and am disappointed this time. "

" When I purchased my rental car from keddy I read the terms and conditions of the agreement which outlined I was not obliged to pay a young driver surcharge as I was over 22. I paid extra for excess cover which entitled me to extra cover for windscreen and tyres and waiver protection which entitled me to not have to pay an excess. However when I got to europcar in faro I was told that everything I had bought was exempt as I was classed at a young driver at age of 23 and I had to pay an extra €111 on top of already paying €150. Autoeurope states that there are no hidden fees, however I feel this is misleading as I got charged extra when i clearly read the terms of the rental! "

" My experience with InterRent is like nothing I've come across before when renting a car. There was a wait at the airport for the mini bus to bring you to the pick up area. The wait then to pick up the car was over hour and 15 mins. The staff then took up to 15 mins to process your car, they had nothing ready. Then they car we had booked they didn't have (so they had to give us an upgrade). I will never recommend Inter Rent, we spoke with someone else and they had a 3 hour wait to collect their car. Their excuse was they were not expecting so many people together. "

We were left with no other option that to pay additional fees to reduce the excess, which I had already paid to cover separately. "

Arrived at office and quite a grumpy young man printed my papers and car on papers was FIAT PUNTO. I asked for any other car as there were several cars on the premises. Grumpy young man got more grumpy and went outside came back in and did not address me at all and printed more papers showing a Nissan Note. I thanked him and he said it was a far inferior car in his opinion!! Anyhow apart from that car was great! "

I hired the car for one day drove 35 km on my way back to the car hire, I went to fill the car,I stopped filling at 8.73 the gauge was still showing three quarters full. I brought this to the attention of Almo. Their view was that This can happen as it was the previous customer must not have filled it up. No refund? "
" Staff was friendly, but unfortunately I came across a situation where there was no cars available (second time this happens) instead of a fast and smooth experience for returning customer, so I ended up spending more than 1 hour waiting to leave in a rental car. Additionally, I believe that rental companies aiming to achieve competitive advantage can do a better job collecting and managing customers information for returning customers including driving licence and credit card details (always provided in advance for online booking). It shouldn't never take more than 30 minutes to leave with the rental car, but after multiple unpleasant experiences with Inter rent at LIS airport, I will give their competitors a chance. Thank you. They tried to blame us for damage that was there at the start of the rental. (They were also trying this with another customer). It was scratched to the extent that it took over 40 mins to put it down on paper and more importantly it was disgusting filthy inside (stained seats and inside the door, wasn't even hoovered properly). Only after we complained, we were given a different car which we had no problem with. Also be careful what time you need to drop the car back as we were charged 30 euro for dropping it back at 7.30 am despite the fact they were probably open anyway as there was lots of people there when we arrived. The company (Benerent) is not located in Lisbon Airport nor do they have an office there, there is an 6-8 minute walk to a carpark where the paperwork is filled out and the car is handed over at the carpark paystation. 2. Zero Excess was listed in the add and was one of the reasons that attracted me to this company, when the car was hired they insisted on a 600 deposit and as at that point I had no other choice to pay. They said the zero excess was not offered by Benerent, this was between myself and Auto Europe. 3. Car booked and photo shown was a saloon car, actual car given was a hatchback punto. call for more "

I asked for a lift to Terminal 2 as I was late and I was told no, at the last minute the I was offered a lift as they were dropping a rep to Terminal 1. I really appreciated the lift. if the correct Information had been given from the start I would of had not rented from this company as this caused me great stress during my holiday "

They are very particular about mapping every mark on the car before you take it and your deposit is clearly at risk if a minor scratch or dent is caused . One such mark was missed when we took our car . We drove on the motorway to our destination and back without incident . There was a mark on the boot which was not visible ordinarily but they marked it against us on return. In fairness after an argument no charge was made but this company clearly has a policy of forfeiting deposits where a car is marked. I would not use it again . "

Interrent informed us that the insurance was not with Interrent directly and that we would have to cover damages directly to Interrent to a limit of 1200 approx. and we would then have to claim back from Auto Europe. we were of the opinion that our cover was complete and it made us a bit wary of having to cover any small dents or marks which always occur on holidays. fortunately we did not have any ,and no costs were incurred. this was our only concern "

" Highly dissatisfied. Excellent service when picking up the car, so only allowed about 2 hours 15 minutes to drop car back before return flight. What a mistake, service was terrible on return. Queue of about 7 returnees in front of me and 'manager' only one handling returns taking 10 minutes or more with each. Almost missed my flight and I'm pretty sure several german couples in front of us did miss their flights as a result of the terribly slow and incompetent service from inter-rent. Will cancel my rental if ever offered this company again "

" On collecting our car we had to wait in a queue of just two people for more than 50 minutes before we were served. This was because only one person was behind the counter while another member of staff appeared to be tidying up and unavailable to receive customers. This was far too long and spoiled the start of our holiday. This was annoying as I has [INVALID]ed Guerin from previous experiences that had been ok to good (waiting time on collecting car especially). In future I am now more likely to arrange to be collected from the airport and to rent locally at my destination. My experience with Auto Europe has been excellent over the years but you are so dependent on customer service or lack of it from your suppliers at Faro airport. "

" I arrived without my driving licence. Whilst I acknowledge this was an error on my part they would not accept a faxed copy which I had someone on stand by to fax to me. I had to change the whole details of the booking to my sisters name who has no experience of driving in Portugal. Cannot understand why a faxed copy of my licence was not enough. The same happened to somebody else and a faxed copy was accepted. Not sure what rental company "

" The excess we were liable for was a lot higher (E1500) than we have been accustomed to in other European countries. We were given an Audi A1 which is a very nice car but I am sure the Ford Focus we were expecting has more space. There were quite a few non-standard rental companies at Lisbon airport as well. Not sure if Auto Europe looked at these when searching for the best deal? "
" Would have been good if we were told about the Toll prior to driving but overall service very good. Would use again. As a suggestion, a sun screen visor would be a welcome addition when hiring in a hot climate as the seating and steering wheel was intensely hot many times and we needed to turn air-con on before getting into car. " I was not met with a hand-held sign-I had to look very hard to find rep.Interrent are not in the airport complex, so it takes a long time to actually take possession of the car, by the time you get a shuttle and fill in all the paperwork.The fact that you are penalised for dropping off the car early is ridiculous.The office was open, but because we were there before the time on the booking, we were going to be charged 25 euro.It is also very unfair that you have to return the car empty and don't get credit for unused fuel. One person to deal with all the drop offs wasn't satisfactory,particularly when people are rushing for flights.Shuttle bus was only 8-seater, which meant I had to leave my family behind while I went to check in.
