    Driving information Uruguay

    General Information

Uruguay is situated in South America and has an extensive road network. Most roads originate from the capital Montevideo. With a vehicle in Uruguay you can explore this beautiful country. Drive along the coast, either east or west or head out north and get to know the more rural areas of Uruguay.

    Requirements
To rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 2 years. In some cases drivers under the age of 25 might face extra fees locally.

    Speed Limits
    Speed limits in Uruguay are:

    • Town and city: 50 km/h
    • Open Roads: 90 km/h
    • Motorways: 100 km/h

    Traffic restrictions
In Uruguay, like in Ireland, you drive on the right side of the road. Always remember to take it extremely easy and avoid driving in the city centre. Dipped head lights should be used all the time and it is not allowed to use a hand held mobile phone while driving.

    Petrol
Most petrol stations in Uruguay are open between 06:00 - 20:00. Some stations along the motorway are open 24 h.

    Tolls
There are a few tolls in Uruguay. They are not that expensive.

    Parking
In Montevideo and other cities you can find parking spots. When visiting shops or bigger establishments there are often "acomodadores" (parking attendants) who will guard over your car while you are away.
