    Driving information United Arab Emirates

    General Information

The United Arab Emirates boasts modern roads in pristine condition. Any class of car hire will do unless you plan on going on a desert safari in which case you'll need a 4x4. As in most western countries driving is done on the right while overtaking should be done on the left. Locals are known for driving rather aggressively making last minute unexpected lane changes a national sport. Drive defensively and always give yourself sufficient space for unpredictable and erratic driving conditions.

To rent a vehicle in United Arab Emirates, you must be at least 18 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 1 year. You will also need an International drivers license which is basically a translation of your normal license. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional young driver surcharge may apply locally. Seatbelts are mandatory.

    Speed Limits
    Speed limits in UAE are:

    • Town and city: 60 km/h
    • Open Roads: 120 km/h
    • Motorways: 120 km/h

    Traffic restrictions
In the United Arab Emirates you drive on the right and overtake on the left. Driving can be a challenge especially in bigger cities such as Abu Dhabi.

Petrol stations in major cities and on the motorways are open 24 hours.

You will not encounter many tolled roads while travelling through the U.A.E. other than in Dubai where there are a few. An automatic payment system known as Salik has been introduced which allows for payment via electronic chip installed on your windshield.

Car parks belonging to hotels, shopping centers, supermarkets etc are usually free though quite often full. Street parking or public car parks are usually 1 or 2 dhs per hour.
