    Driving information Turkey

    General Information

In Turkey you will find well-maintained roads. The government has made big investments to improve the national roads. But still you must be aware of that the accident rate is among the highest in the world. Drive defensively, keep a good distance to other cars and avoid driving during the night.
Drive your rental car along the Turkish Riviera and visit places like Antalya and Alanya. Up in the north you can travel from Istanbul and south to the capital of Ankara.

To rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 1 year. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional young driver surcharge may apply locally. Some suppliers have a maximum rental age of 70 years. Seatbelts are mandatory for the driver and all passengers. Child seats are not mandatory but we strongly recommend it.

    Speed Limits
    Speed limits in Turkey are:

    • Town and city: 50 km/h
    • Open Roads: 90 km/h
    • Motorways: 90 km/h

    Traffic restrictions
In Turkey you drive on the right side of the road. In the centre of many cities there are many one-way streets that might obstruct driving. In rural locations keep in mind that farm animals on the road are common. Dipped headlights should always be used.

Along the south Turkish Riviera you will find a large amount of petrol stations and in Istanbul. In the rural locations there are big distances between stations. Be sure to fill up your car before traveling to the countryside. Petrol stations are normally open between 06:00 to 22:00 (24 h on the motorway).

There are currently two toll motorways in Turkey. You can pay by using a cash card which you load with a suitable amount. You can also pay by cash.

In Turkey there are no parking meters. You pay your parking to a parking official, this is the case in Ankara. If you wish to park for a longer time parking garages an public parking lots are available.
