    Driving information Thailand

    General Information

Thailand is an exotic country in many ways. The style of driving might also be exotic for western European drivers. There are a few things you should consider before driving in Thailand. Never drive on the countryside during the night and watch out for roads turned into one-way roads certain hours a day. Special attention should be directed towards the hazardous overtaking done by motorcyclists and vespa drivers. Also keep an eye on all the bicycles. Drive carefully and enjoy this beautiful country that has many amazing things to offer.

    Requirements
To rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 1 year. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional young driver surcharge may apply locally. Your Irish driver's license works fine.

    Speed Limits
    Speed limits in Thailand are:

    • Town and city: 60 km/h
    • Open Roads: 90 km/h
    • Motorways: 120 km/h

    Traffic restrictions
In Thailand, like in England drive on the left side of the road. Please note that using a mobile phone while driving is banned in Thailand. If you must use your phone make sure you have a hands-free device. Fines for traffic violations have to be paid at the local police office.

    Petrol
Petrol stations are easy to find in and around the larger cities and tourist resorts. We recommend that you fill up your rental car at stations with well known brand names.

    Tolls
There are some toll roads near Bangkok. More toll roads are planned in the future.

    Parking
Due to the large amount of cars in Thailand parking spaces can be difficult to find in the larger cities. Never park where there is a red, yellow or a white line painted on the curb. The signs are normally in English (in tourist areas). Read them carefully and pay for your parking.
