    Driving information Slovenia

    General Information

Slovenia has an extensive motorway system that will take you in all directions. This offers easy access to neighboring countries like Italy and Austria. Drive to the beautiful mountain resorts in the Alps and in the other direction you will find coastal resorts on the Adriatic Sea. One of the most popular resort communities is located on Lake Bled where there is skating and curling in the winter months and swimming and rowing in the summer months.

    Requirements
To rent a car, you must be at least 18 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 1 year. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional young driver surcharge may apply locally. Some suppliers also have a maximum age of 73 years. Drivers between 70 to 73 years old have to pay an extra fee. Seatbelts are mandatory for the driver and all passengers. Children under age 12 have to be seated only in the back seat.

    Speed Limits
    Speed limits in Slovenia are:

    • Town and city: 60 km/h
    • Open Roads: 80 km/h
    • Motorways: 120 km/h

    Traffic restrictions
In Slovenia traffic travels on the right. Dipped headlights are mandatory during the whole day. Between 15 Nov and 15 Mar the car must be equipped with snow tires. If you are driving to the mountains be sure to bring snow chains as well. In Slovenia it is easy to drive also to the neighboring countries of Italy and Croatia. Always let us know when you book if you intend to travel abroad.

    Petrol
Petrol stations in the cities are normally open 13:00 to 20:00 and closed on Sundays. Fuel stations near the motorway or at border crossings are often open 24 h.

    Tolls
The A10/E70, A1/E63 and the A10/E57 motorways are subject to a toll payment. You pay by using a toll sticker (Vignette) that can be bought at petrol stations and motor clubs.

    Parking
Parking your car in the city centre of Ljubljana can be a hard task. If you find a free spot it is most certainly a paid parking. Use the Parkomats (meters) and place the receipt on your dashboard. Please note that no change is given. After 6pm on weekdays and on Sundays parking is free. Ljubljana is a safe city and car thefts are rare.
