    Driving information Norway

    General Information

    Norway offers almost 90 815 km of motorway and smaller roads. Take the E18 south from Oslo down to Kristiansand and then the smaller roads further to Stavanger. It is a beautiful drive along the North Sea coast. If you wish to travel north take the E6 up to the little town of Lillehammer (where the Winter Olympics where held in 1994).

    Requirements
    To rent a car, you must be at least 19 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 1 year. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional young driver surcharge may apply locally. Seatbelts are mandatory and so are child seats for children up to 4 years.

    Speed Limits
    Speed limits in Norway are:

    • Town and city: 50 km/h
    • Open Roads: 80 km/h
    • Motorways: 110 km/h

    Traffic restrictions
    Traffic travels on the right and all trams should be passed on the right. Please be aware that dipped headlights should be used at all times. The alcohol level is the strictest in Europe - only 0.2 mg/ml. The fines are expensive and collected on the spot. Never drink and drive!

    Petrol
    Petrol stations are normally open between 06:00 to 19:00.

    Tolls
    Many of the motorways and major roads in Norway will require you to pay a toll. Various bridges and tunnels throughout the country may also require a toll to be paid. In many cases this fee is included in your car hire or debited by the local supplier.

    Parking
    You may not park in a main road in Norway. There are though many municipal parking lots. The meters are categorized by colour. Yellow meters means you can park for 1 hour, grey meters allow parking for 2 hours and brown machines permits you to park for 3 hours.

    Car rental insurance varies widely, so please study the information below prior to making your booking. Regulations of the country where you rent the car will be in effect for the duration of your rental.

    All our car hire rates include Collision Damage coverage and Theft Protection for the vehicle. Rental limits potential vehicle damage or loss liability to an excess, which is stated on your voucher. If you plan to take advantage of coverage offered by your credit card, please contact your card issuer directly for details. Specific insurance information for your reservation will be printed on your confirmation voucher.

    Rental Restrictions

    General Information
    There are different rules applying for Norway, so please let us know if you plan on taking your car outside of Norway. There are additional insurance fees that apply for these rentals.     Domestic one-way rentals are available between certain locations, additional fees may apply. Fees also apply for international one-way rentals. Some vehicles are prohibited on international one way rentals.
