It is wonderful to explore Jamaica with a car hire. This 243 km long island has fantastic beaches and nice little villages. If you wish to listen to local music visit Kingston with your rental car. Be aware of the local driving style though. Keep a big distance to cars and drive defensively.
Requirements
To rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 1 year. For drivers under the age of 22 an additional young driver surcharge may apply locally. The maximum rental age is 70 years. Seatbelts and child seats are mandatory.
Speed Limits
Speed limits in Jamaica are:
Traffic restrictions
In Jamaica you drive on the left side of the road, just like in Ireland. Avoid driving during the night and always keep your windows and doors closed and locked. Also do not carry with you large amount of cash or other items of value. The signing as well as the quality of many roads is poor. Plan your trip carefully.
Petrol
There are many petrol stations in Jamaica. Bring cash, since all stations might not accept credit cards.
Tolls
The "Highway 2000" is a toll road. You pay the toll either by cash or with a TAG card.
Parking
Parking is normally hard to find in the bigger cities. Many hotels and shopping centres offer secure parking. Avoid parking on the street during the night.
