    Driving information Estonia

    General Information

The current network of roads in Estonia is quite extensive, however there are few major motorways. In recent years, the government has developed scenic tourist routes that are connected to neighboring countries. The 'Via Baltica' runs south-west from the capital of Tallin through Parnu to Riga, Latvia. The 'Via Estonia' runs south-east from Tallin to the Russian border. The 'Via Hansa' motorway parallels the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland and leads to Narva and St. Petersburg.

To rent a car, you must be at least 19 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 1 year. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional young driver surcharge may apply locally. Seatbelts are mandatory.

    Speed Limits
    Speed limits in Estonia are:

    • Town and city: 50 km/h
    • Open Roads: 90 km/h
    • Motorways: 100 km/h

    Traffic restrictions
In Estonia you drive on the right side of the road. Please also be aware that dipped headlights should be used at all times.

Petrol can be found in bigger cities and along the motorways. Be sure to fill up your tank before driving in the countryside.

There are no motorway tolls in Estonia.

In some spots you can park by buying a disc or ticket from a meter and place it well visible on your dashboard. Please note that illegal parking might lead to a wheel clamp being placed on your car tires. Always read the parking signs.
