    Driving information Bulgaria

    General Information

Bulgaria is a pretty small country and with a rental car you can cross the country in just 6 hours. Bulgaria has more than 12800 km of roads. From the capital Sofia in the west you can easily drive to the Black Sea coast and visit towns like Varna or Bourgas.

    Requirements
To rent a car, you must be at least 20 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 1 year. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional young driver surcharge may apply locally. Seatbelts are mandatory for the driver and all passengers.

    Speed Limits
    Speed limits in Bulgaria are:

    • Town and city: 50 km/h
    • Open Roads: 80 km/h
    • Motorways: 120 km/h

    Traffic restrictions
In Bulgaria you drive on the right side of the road. Always give way to trams and pedestrians crossing a zebra crossing. In the countryside you should be aware that farm animals can block the roads. Also note that road signs and markings are often poor or missing in Bulgaria.

    Petrol
Petrol stations are normally open between 06:00 to 22:00 and can be found every 15 - 25 km along the main roads. Some stations in the capital of Sofia are open 24 h.

    Tolls
There are no toll roads in Bulgaria. Please note that you need a vignette (toll sticker) to drive on the Bulgarian roads. The stickers can be bought at petrol stations. Please ask at pick up, the vignette might be included in your car hire rate.

    Parking
On a one-way street you are only allowed to park on the right side. Parking in Blue zone areas is common in built up areas. Here you use a ticket instead of a disc. In many cities it is hard to find parking spots.

    Insurance Information

    General Information
Car rental insurance varies widely, so please study the information below prior to making your booking. Regulations of the country where you rent the car will be in effect for the duration of your rental.

All our car hire rates include Collision Damage coverage and Theft Protection for the vehicle. Rental limits potential vehicle damage or loss liability to an excess, which is stated on your voucher. If you plan to take advantage of coverage offered by your credit card, please contact your card issuer directly for details. Specific insurance information for your reservation will be printed on your confirmation voucher.

    Rental Restrictions

    General Information
Most car categories can be driven within Western Europe. If you wish to drive abroad (outside Bulgaria) you need to purchase additional coverage. Please note that you may not take your rental car on a ferry. Due to insurance regulations, there are restrictions on luxury car categories and on travel in certain countries. Please take a moment to ensure that your intended itinerary will be possible with the car you plan to book.

    Restricted Countries
With a car hire in Bulgaria you can normally drive to Greece and other Western European countries after prior confirmation. There are different rules applying so please let us know if you plan on taking your car outside of Bulgaria. There are additional insurance fees that apply for these rentals.
