    Driving information Australia

    General Information

Australia is a vast country. Here you can cruise with your rental car on over 894 795 km of motorway. The roads can take you all over this great continent nation. From Sydney you can travel on the roads by the sea up to Brisbane or south to Melbourne. In Perth, the most remote big city in the world, a rental car is really a must. Be aware of the great distances and bring extra water and maybe a spare tank with fuel.

    Requirements
To rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 1 year. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional young driver surcharge may apply locally. Some suppliers have restrictions also for drivers over 75 years of age. Seatbelts are mandatory for both driver and passengers.

    Speed Limits

    Speed limits in Australia are:

    • Town and city: 35 mps/60 km/h
    • Motorways: 68 mph/110 km/h

    Traffic restrictions
In Australia you drive on the left side of the road, just like in Ireland. In Australia the blood alcohol limit is 0.5 mg/ml. Never drink and drive!

    Petrol
There are many petrol stations and the opening hours vary, depending on location. Most stations accept international credit cards. Petrol tends to cost more in country areas.

    Tolls
There is a toll to cross the Sydney Harbor Bridge and also tolls on some of the motorways when exiting Brisbane. These tolls cost about 1 - 2 EUR. You can take alternate routes to avoid these toll charges.

    Parking
Parking lots and meters are common in major Australian cities. Be aware that you might only be able to park for 2-4 hours in the city centre. In Sydney it is really expensive to park. One tip is to park the car in the outskirts and take a commuter train into the centre. It is cheaper.
