Located on the European side of the city, Istanbul Airport was inaugurated in April 2019. The current airport was constructed due to the fact that its predecessor Atatürk Airport was reaching max capacity and thus a new solution needed to be found. Istanbul Airport is extremely modern and when fully complete, will encompass a total of four terminals and six runways. As one of world’s largest airports, it will ultimately be able to handle around 200 million passengers yearly.

Reaching the City of Istanbul is easy with ample routes available once you collect your car hire at Istanbul Airport . In just under an hour you’ll be able to drive to the city from the airport along the D020 national road – making this route an excellent choice. An alternative route to the airport is via the North Marmara Motorway over the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge.
If you are heading towards the European side of Turkey, then from the airport you can easily reach numerous points of interest, including Levent, Maslak, Taksim, Avcilar and Gayrettepe. Otherwise, if you are heading towards the Asian side of Turkey, then Kadıköy, Pendik, Üsküdar and Kavacık are easily reached.
Every 15 minutes a regular bus route runs between the airport and Taksim, Besiktas and Mecidiyeköy. An express bus service also exists and is run by IETT and HAVAIST. This heads to various other European and Asia parts of the city, with journey times varying up to an hour and a half. A new metro line is set to open in 2020, which will significantly shorten journey times from the city to the airport.
Plans are also in the pipeline for a high-speed train link from the airport to the city via the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge. This route will also significantly shorten travel times between the Asian and European sides of the city.
With an impressive 40,000 car parking spots across five combined outdoor and multi-storey car parks, the airport has ample space for all travellers and visitors alike. In four parking garages, parking is spread out over seven floors, whilst at one parking garage it is spread out over three floors. Together, these car parks contain a total of 900 dedicated disabled parking bays conveniently located closer to the terminal entrances. Car garages also offer a car washing facility, tyre services and a refuelling station.
Parking in Istanbul, like within Ankara, can be difficult and very stressful at times, especially if you do not know the local streets. It is therefore often advised to park in the safety of your hotel and take public transport when possible. If you fancy the challenge then you'll find parking garages in all of Istanbul's districts. Known as IsParks, these secure car parks are run by the city council. Although they do become extremely busy during the mornings and evenings. The cost for parking is considered cheaper in comparison with other European cities.
