Driving Overview

General Information
In Poland you can drive along almost 199, 640 km of road. These roads will take you around this big country. Rent a car in Warsaw or Gdansk and take a tour on the countryside. From the capital of Warsaw a multilane motorway will lead you to small villages and towns in the rural areas. There are many ongoing projects to improve the standard of the roads in the remote areas. If you pass a horse drawn carriage be sure to give it right of way and never honk the horn!

To rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 1 year. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional young driver surcharge may apply locally. Some car categories have restrictions for drivers over 70 years. Seatbelts are mandatory and children under 4 years must be seated in a car seat.

Speed Limits
Speed limits in Poland are:

  • Town and city: 60 km/h
  • Open Roads: 90 km/h
  • Motorways: 110 km/h

Traffic restrictions
In Poland you drive on the right side of the road. Please also be aware that dipped headlights should be used between 1 Oct to 1 Mar. Also note that roads in the rural areas of Poland can be in bad condition and so can cars that you meet. Always drive defensively.

On the motorway you will find a petrol station approx. every 40 km. They are normally open between 06:00 to 22:00.

On the following motorways (Autostradas) you will have to pay a road toll: A1, A2 and A4.

Small cars can park half-on and half-off the pavement. To be sure park in a guarded parking garage to avoid car theft. In Krakow we recommend you to park a bit outside the city centre and take public transportation or a taxi to the centre. Always read the signs carefully when parking in Poland.
