Driving Overview

General Information
The Cayman Islands consists of three islands: Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. The Cayman Islands are mostly flat which makes the island easy to explore by car. With a car hire in The Cayman Islands you can enjoy sandy beaches, quaint little harbor towns and amazing snorkeling opportunities.

To rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 2 years. You'll also need a visitor's driver license which will be furnished by our local rental partner. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional young driver surcharge may apply locally. The maximum rental age is 70 years. Seatbelts and child seats are mandatory.

Speed Limits
Speed limits in Cayman Islands are:

  • Town and city: 40-48 km/h (25-30 mph)
  • Open Roads: 64 km/h (40 mph)
  • Bigger roads: 80 km/h (50 mph)

Traffic restrictions
In The Cayman Islands you drive on the left side of the road, just like in Ireland. While there are currently no laws prohibiting talking, texting, or emailing on a cell phone while driving it can be very dangerous and has become a hotly discussed topic for lawmakers who are considering new laws banning mobile devices in cars.

Petrol stations are normally open between 07:00 to 20:00.

There are no toll roads in The Cayman Islands.

Parking is free and most hotels and restaurants have ample parking available.
