Malta consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino. On Malta there are no mountains or rivers which makes the island easy to explore by car. Witha  car from Malta you can enjoy sandy beaches, quaint little harbour towns and archeological findings.

To rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 2 years. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional  young driver surcharge may apply locally. The maximum rental age is 70 years. Seatbelts are mandatory. Child seats are not mandatory but we recommend that you use a suitable car seat for your children.

Speed Limits
Speed limits in Malta are:

  • Town and city: 50 km/h
  • Open Roads: 80 km/h

In Malta you drive on the left side of the road, just like in Ireland. In Malta it is forbidden to use a mobile phone while driving. Please note: also hands free devices are banned.

Petrol stations are normally open between 07:00 to 20:00.

In the larger towns of Malta and areas such as Luqa, you will find parking meters in the streets. They allow you to park for 1 to 2 hours. If you wish to park longer use a parking garage. Watch out for double yellow lines. They indicate parking is not allowed there. Public parking is normally free of charge. Always read the signs carefully.
