Driving Tips Belgium

General Information
Drive your rental car in Belgium. Here you can easily reach all major towns by using a motorway. The distance to other countries like France, The Netherlands and Germany is very short. But be sure to explore the nice towns in the country as well. Visit the old town of Bruges, bustling Brussels or fantastic Antwerp.

To rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old (age can vary by car category) and have held your driver's license for at least 1 year. For drivers under the age of 25 an additional  young driver surcharge may apply locally. Seatbelts are mandatory and so are child seats for children up to 3 years.

Speed Limits
Speed limits in Belgium are:

  • Town and city: 50 km/h
  • Open roads: 90 km/h
  • Motorways: 120 km/h

Traffic restrictions
Traffic travels on the right and all trams should be given way. Be aware of bikers while driving.

Petrol stations are normally open between 08:00 to 20:00. On the national motorway you will find some stations open 24 h.

There are no toll roads in Belgium. The Liefenhoeks Tunnel i Antwerp, however, does require a toll.

You can park by using a meter on the street or park in a "Blue zone". To park for free in the "Blue zone" you must first obtain a parking disc at a petrol station, local shop or police station. With this disc you can normally park for 3 hours.
