General Traffic and Parking Rules

The legal driving age in Spain is 18 years old. As in most of the world outside the U.K. driving is done on the right hand side while overtaking is on the left. In Spain a spare tire and tire change kit as well as reflective vest and triangle are mandatory. You may be hit with a steep fine if caught without these.

Although you'll see many locals on their cell phones while driving, it is indeed illegal and you should try and avoid the temptation. In general speed limits are as follows:

  • Motorways - 120 km/h
  • Major Highways - 100 km/h
  • Open Roads - 90 km/h
  • Built Up Areas - 50 km/h
  • Residential Roads - 20 km/h

Anyone who has had a car hire in Spain in the past has undoubtedly noticed the many mopeds and motorbikes on the roads, especially when they?re weaving in and out of traffic. The Spaniards are quite fond of their two wheeled vehicles and require extra attention as they are more exposed to danger. Do not park on pavements which are painted yellow and try to keep loose change as there are many tolled roads throughout Spain. If you find yourself in an accident contact the police immediately, obtain a police report and contact Auto Europe for further support.
